Participating in a sharp, dependable virtual meeting like the Ellermeyer Connect Forum matters more than ever—especially for business leaders and networkers who rely on virtual conversations to build real-world relationships. The technology may be new, but the foundation is timeless: show up prepared, be present, and respect everyone’s time.
1) Start With Your Set-Up
A strong meeting starts with your environment. A clean background, steady lighting, and a stable camera tell people you take the conversation seriously. It’s the same principle as walking into a boardroom looking put-together—simple, traditional, and effective.
2) Mind Your Media
Sound is your next priority. People can overlook an average camera, but they won’t push through distorted or echoing audio. Using a headset or external microphone, especially in bustling home offices, makes every word land the way you intend. When you are not talking, MUTE YOURSELF.
Be sure to use the video tools for the background. If your set-up is in a cluttered room, either blur or choose a custom background. Create a background that contains your logo and contact info is a good tip as long as it is not very busy.
3) Arrive Early and Be Present
Arrive early. Logging in a couple of minutes ahead avoids the digital scramble and sets the tone for professionalism. It mirrors the familiar courtesy of arriving at an in-person meeting before the chairs fill.
Once the meeting begins, stay fully present. Avoid multitasking and keep your attention in the virtual room. Look toward the camera when speaking to recreate face-to-face connection—an underrated advantage for leaders who want to stand out in an increasingly remote business landscape.
4) Use The Tools
Use the tools of the platform. Open the chat window, make private connections and post public comments. Use the chat to thank presenters and ask for more information. Use the raise-hand tool to get attention. Add a descriptor to your name. IE: Bob Smith, Fractional CFO
5) Wrap Up Cleanly
End the session with structure. Summarize action items, confirm next steps, and close on time. People appreciate clarity and consistency, and it reinforces your reputation as someone who runs a tight and respectful meeting.
Strong virtual communication isn’t a trend—it’s part of the modern business toolkit. Master these fundamentals, and your Zoom meetings will carry the same weight and professionalism as any boardroom gathering in Southern California’s thriving business community.
